NEA Opposes Expansion of Concealed Carry for Law Enforcement
The NEA is urging Congress to vote against H.R. 2243, which expands LEOSA concealed carry protections across state lines. The bill would allow more law enforcement officers—active and retired—to carry firearms into otherwise restricted areas, including schools, regardless of local jurisdictional rules.
Concerns Raised by Educators About Expanded LEOSA Provisions
The National Education Association opposes the expansion, citing fears that it may increase the presence of guns on school grounds. Educators argue that overriding local and state-level firearm restrictions risks escalating school-based conflicts or accidents, especially where gun-free zones are deliberately established.
EDITOR OPINION: No one wants gun violence at schools. But at what point is it too far – Asking our children in doctor’s visits if we have guns in the home; opposing carry for off-duty LEO’s. It doesn’t seem like anything is off limits for those who hate guns. Forget decorum and common sense.
Balancing Law Enforcement Rights with Community Safety
Proponents argue that law enforcement officers should maintain their carry rights regardless of retirement or jurisdiction. However, critics—especially in the education sector—believe this could undermine school safety planning and conflict with local governance. H.R. 2243 remains a contentious issue as it moves through the House.
