House Committee Advances Suppressor Tax Repeal

The House Ways and Means Committee approved a proposal to eliminate the $200 federal tax on firearm suppressors. While the suppressors would remain regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA), the repeal would remove the financial barrier originally established in 1934.

Details of the Suppressor Tax Repeal Proposal

This legislative action targets a longstanding component of the NFA, which imposes a $200 tax on purchasing suppressors (also known as silencers). Supporters argue that the tax is outdated, disproportionately burdens law-abiding gun owners, and serves no meaningful public safety function in modern enforcement.

Regulatory Status and Congressional Path Forward

Even if the tax is repealed, suppressors would still be subject to background checks and registration under the NFA. The bill now proceeds to the House Budget Committee. Advocacy groups including the NRA and suppressor manufacturers support the change, while gun control organizations have voiced strong opposition.
