Texas legislation to legalize Permitless Carry takes effect starting September 1

  • Texas Lawmakers have passed a bill that allows anyone who can legally own firearms to carry them in a holster while in public
  • Texas is still requiring background checks when buying from a licensed dealer and the minimum age to own a handgun is 21 years old

Missouri gun rights law faces fierce opposition from law enforcement officials

  • Missouri’s New Gun Law Divides Police – Missouri’s new gun law, which imposes a $50,000 fine on any state or local official who enforces a federal gun law that is not also state law
  • The city of St. Louis, St. Louis County, and Jackson County filed a lawsuit in June to block enforcement of the law that’s set to go into effect on August 28
  • This is seen as a major win for gun rights if the law proceeds unobstructed

Biden Administration advocates “red flag” laws

  • President Joe Biden along with his Attorney General, Merrick Garland have advocated “red flag” laws that allow courts to temporarily restrict individuals from possessing or accessing guns based on allegations alone
  • These types of laws will also be imposed without notice to the affected person whether he or she has no opportunity to attend or contest allegations
  • Critics such as the NRA voice their concerns over the impact on civil liberties and  lack of due process

Democrats and their plans to restrict gun ownership

  • The U.S. State Department on August 20 announced that it would be prohibiting the importation of Russian firearms and ammunition despite the ammunition supply shortage
  • According to the Department, the reason behind the ban is apart of a “second round of sanctions on the Russian Federation over its use of a ‘Novichok’ nerve agent in the August 2020 poisoning of Russian opposition figure Aleksey Navalny.”
